These sculptures are inspired by the feeling I get every time I bike through Amsterdam, which gives me the feeling of being able to take on the world. The motif of the closed eyes and heads bent backwards are derived from the feeling I get when I observe myself and the people around me riding bikes. Perhaps the feeling even contains a dash of Dutch arrogance, combined with the sense of freedom that riding the
bike gives me.
Some of the reliefs are based on and are inspired by real people. Like the man in Buitenveldert that hops on his bike wearing his swimming trunks to enjoy the first appearance of Spring’s warm sunshine.
